Open Data Licenses

Oivana’s food search and barcode lookup are built on open data. This page names each source, the license it comes with, and where to read it.

Open Food Facts

Packaged-food products found by name or by barcode come from Open Food Facts, a database written by the Open Food Facts contributors.

USDA FoodData Central

Generic and cooked foods (a banana, a bowl of rice) come from USDA FoodData Central: the Foundation Foods, SR Legacy and FNDDS data sets. Some packaged products, mostly sold in the United States, come from its Branded Foods data set, which Oivana combines with Open Food Facts by barcode.

European food composition databases

The generic foods you find by name in your own language, and the iodine and other trace nutrients shown for them, also come from four national food composition databases. Each is used under the license named below. Where a license asks us to say what we changed, it is stated with the credit.

Bundeslebensmittelschlüssel (BLS), Germany

Livsmedelsdatabasen, Sweden

McCance and Widdowson’s Composition of Foods (CoFID), United Kingdom

Fineli, Finland

The nutrition values shown in Oivana can differ from the values on the source’s own site, because we convert units and show one carbohydrate figure (including fibre) for every food. Check the source for anything that matters to you.
